When You Work With Me, You Get:
Experience You Can Trust
Clients turn to me for help with all sorts of projects, from recipes to resumes and research. My credentials include a master's degree in magazine journalism from the University of Oregon (go Ducks!) and a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in business from Oregon State University. In addition to my professional credentials, I am also a member of the Northwest Editors Guild where I have served as a mentor and meeting host for Editors Helping Editors.
Before switching to owning my own editing business, I worked in the editorial departments of major magazines such as Men's Health and Cooking Light. As a staffer, I edited recipes, proofread articles, ensured research was being accurately reported on, and wrote stories. As a writer, I have hundreds of articles to my name on everything from starfruit to detached retinas in publications like Eater, Architectural Digest, and Oregon Healthy Living.

One-on-One Help
I work on a freelance basis with individual clients. What does that mean? Instead of working with an employer 40 hours a week, I take on individual clients, so I can set aside whatever amount of time I need to help you get your work to where you would like it to be. It's the way I have run my business for 15 years, and I’ve found it to be the best model to help my clients be successful.
Long-Lasting Relationships
Many of my clients come back to me over and over throughout the years. Here's what a few of them have to say:
"Melissa's patience and expertise was invaluable to me in developing and finalizing a peer-reviewed article about my work with the Chinese community in Salem. This article was not only successfully published, our work was ultimately recognized with the 2022 Joel Palmer Award. I couldn't have done it without her help!" Kimberli Fitzgerald, Client
"Melissa is an uber-organized, delightful and generous guide to the wild and woolly world of editing. She was able to get down to brass tacks quickly and help me with just what I needed. You won't regret working with her." LS, Mentoring Client
“I have been working with Melissa for two years, and she remains my first point of contact whenever I need my papers proofread or edited. She is professional, fast, extremely careful, friendly, and affordable. Since I am not a native English speaker, and most of my work is scientific in nature, I always had a problem finding a person who could understand the content of my work, and be able to edit it without changing the meaning of the work. Melissa is among very few who could fill in the job.” Frankie (dissertation client)
I've worked with Melissa twice now and highly, highly recommend her! First she helped me revamp my resume, taking it from lackluster to absolutely sparkling in two sessions that were absolutely well worth the money. About six months later I hired her to help me overhaul my book coaching business plan and website. We met three times; after each session she'd send me notes from the meeting and a to-do list, both of which were super helpful. She's well-organized and so knowledgeable! And kind, warm, and funny. And generous. She's the best! If you're looking for a career jump-start, Melissa is the person for you! Jessie S.

A Little More About Me
Left to right: paragliding in Maui, meeting quokkas in Australia, and hiking in Zion National Park.
When I'm not working, I'm out exploring national parks, soaking in the sun, and playing with my two cats: Willow (named after a run at Mt. Hood Meadows) and Timberline (named after the Timberline Lodge).
